Electronic logs could cut down on truck driver fatigue

A truck that is fully loaded with cargo is a difficult massive in size and weight in comparison to other vehicles on the highways in and around San Antonio, Texas. Keeping drivers alert and preventing truck driver fatigue has always been a concern for government officials who are all too aware of the dangers posed by an inattentive truck driver speeding along the highway.

The requirement that truck drivers maintain a trucking log to record the time they spend behind the wheel driving each day was implemented to provide state and federal officials with a method for enforcing rules limiting truckers to 11 hours of driving during each 14-hour shift. Once they reach their maximums, drivers must take a 10-hour break.

The problem with standard trucking log books is that manual entry of the information by the drivers could easily be manipulated to allow drivers to exceed federal regulations. New technology that became available in recent years replaces the paper trucking log with an electronic one that automatically records driving time from engine use without any input required from the driver.

The consequences of a collision caused by a tired and inattentive truck driver failing to stop in time when approaching traffic congestion are serious injuries and death. Federal trucking regulations will try to prevent this by forcing truck owners to install an electronic trucking log in each truck they put on the road within the next two years.

An electronic trucking log might help to prevent a truck accident caused by truck driver fatigue, but it cannot put an end to defective auto parts, the unqualified truck driver or any of the other causes of trucking accidents that occur each years. When accidents happen because of the negligent conduct of another person, victims who suffer serious injuries might be entitled to recover compensation. A personal injury attorney might be of assistance to the injured party.
