In December 2014, a tragedy occurred in Texas that took the lives of five people. In the aftermath of the fatal accident, a lawsuit was filed against three separate companies. Monetary damages of more than $1,000,000 were sought by the plaintiffs claiming the victims' deaths were caused by the defendants' negligence.
The tragic events unfolded when a high rise senior citizen apartment building caught fire. More than 100 former residents have since claimed that the fire alarm system in the building was not properly installed, inspected or maintained. They have further stated that the substandard performance of the three companies placed all residents and visitors to the apartment complex at risk.
Five people did not make it out of the fire alive. Attorneys representing those who filed the lawsuit have stated that nine others died at various points later in time due to complications from smoke inhalation during the fire. Although, the legal process remains active in this case, it was recently reported that the plaintiffs have reached a settlement with one of the companies, but details of that settlement were not disclosed.
Losing a loved one in a fatal accident is obviously a devastating experience. Feelings of anger and frustration often accompany grief when an untimely death is believed to have been caused by another party or parties' negligence. Anyone in Texas who has suffered such loss and has questions about how to seek justice on behalf of a deceased loved one may contact a personal injury attorney to discuss the situation.
