Texas parents often rely on other people to transport their children to various extracurricular school activities. For instance, sports teams frequently travel to events at other schools by means of a school bus or van set aside for the purpose. One can only imagine a parent's grief when learning that the bus carrying a son or daughter was involved in a fatal accident.
Sadly, a tragedy of this nature occurred on a recent Thursday night when a boys' track team was traveling by bus. A tractor-trailer is said to have suddenly crossed over the center divide on the road. The massive truck careened into the lane of traffic occupied by the bus, striking it and injuring 18 occupants onboard. Two deaths were confirmed in the incident. One of the injured students had to be airlifted to an emergency medical facility.
It's no secret that tractor-trailer drivers often battle fatigue behind the wheel. Some have been known to abuse prescription drugs and other types of controlled substances while driving. While there have been no reports in this particular case as to what exactly caused the tractor-trailer operator to veer into an opposing lane of traffic, many other similar collisions in the past were later found to have been caused by driver negligence.
Any Texas parent who has lost a child in a fatal accident caused by a motorist may pursue justice in court by filing a wrongful death claim. The same is true for parents of seriously injured minors. A personal injury attorney is experienced in dealing with such situations and can be a great means of support to grieving parents as they seek legal accountability against those deemed responsible.
