Lawsuit Alleges Negligence at Local Nursing Home

San Antonio – A lawsuit that alleges negligence at Parklane West Healthcare Center was filed Tuesday by the families of three former patients at the facility.

The lawsuit, filed by attorney Marynell Maloney, claims the facility failed to provide adequate health care for residents Herbert Brewer, Dora Sylvia Lehrman and Delbert Betts while they were residents at Parklane in 2011.

Brewer, who Maloney said was a decorated hero and among the first African Americans to attain the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, was injured in fall at the facility, according to Maloney.

“He was left for over 14 hours before anybody intervened or did anything about it,” she said.

The lawsuit alleges that among the problems at the facility supporting claims of negligence are staffing issues.

“It comes down to inadequate supervision and staffing and oversight,” Maloney said.

Kristin Puckett, a spokeswoman for Brookdale Living, the parent company of Parklane, said they could not comment on the lawsuit since the company has not yet received a copy.

But in a written response to a request for comment, Puckett replied, “Our community is committed to a high level of quality in the care of our residents and we take seriously our mission of enriching the lives of those we serve with compassion, respect, excellence and integrity.”
